20 Jan 2024 Market Open: In a very surprising move, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) is set to open the share market on Saturday, 20 January 2024 breaking the weekly holiday tradition, to conduct two special live trading sessions at the Disaster Recovery (DR) site.

The first session will commence at 9:15 AM and conclude at 10:00 AM, while the second session will begin at 11:30 AM and conclude at 12:30 PM.

Objective

The primary objective of this trading session is to test the readiness of the stock exchange in handling trading activities without any disruption during adverse conditions, such as cyber attacks, server crashes, or other unforeseen circumstances. The initiative aims to ensure stability in the market and reassure investors.

The NSE has released a circular providing detailed information about the special trading sessions. On January 20, in the equity and equity derivatives segments, a live trading session will be conducted with an intra-day switch from the primary site to the Disaster Recovery site.

The pre-open session will take place from 9:00 AM to 9:08 AM, followed by regular market hours from 9:15 AM to 10:00 AM on the primary website.

During the second session, the live trading will shift to the DR site. The pre-open session will commence at 11:15 AM and conclude at 11:30 AM, with regular market hours from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Additionally, a closing session is scheduled from 12:40 PM to 12:50 PM.

It’s worth mentioning that besides the NSE, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will also organize a special live session on January 20, as stated in circulars released by both exchanges. This innovative approach demonstrates the commitment of the stock exchanges to ensure the resilience of the market infrastructure in challenging situations.
